Meet Melissa
Melissa Shepherd-Williams
I was born and raised in Panama and later moved to California to continue my education, carrying with me a deep love for cultural exchange. That curiosity was nurtured early on by my mother, an educator who created spaces for her students—and for me—to explore identity, heritage, and connection. Our home was alive with celebration, storytelling, music, and the richness of our Panamanian and Caribbean roots. That foundation continues to shape everything I do.
Over the past 25+ years as a psychotherapist, educator, and speaker, I’ve devoted my work to supporting individuals and communities in moving from survival into vibrant, embodied living—what I often call living with gusto. My approach integrates cultural awareness, historical context, and holistic wellness across mind, body, and spirit.
I am the author of From Burnout to Bliss: Rest as Revolution, Because Healing Is the New Hustle (also available in Spanish), a transformative guide for individuals and organizations ready to shift from exhaustion to sustainable well-being. I also authored Living Deliciously: Recipes to Welcome Joy into Our Lives, a collection of reflections and practices designed to help us reconnect with joy, creativity, and intention in everyday life.
My work has extended beyond the therapy room into classrooms, organizations, and media platforms. I have had the honor of serving as a frequent guest expert on Telemundo, where I speak about community wellness, burnout, and Afro Latinx visibility. I have also participated in the Foro Contra el Racismo, a nationwide broadcast in partnership with the Kellogg Foundation, contributing to vital conversations on racism, healing, and collective responsibility. Additionally, I was featured as a guest expert on Univision, discussing the growing engagement in therapy and mental health resources within our communities. Most recently, I served as a panelist at Semana Interamericana at the Organization of American States, contributing to the conversation “Environmental Justice and Ancestral Territories — Rights and Reparations for Afro-descendant Peoples.”
In my clinical and academic roles, I serve as a psychotherapist at California Institute of the Arts and as an Adjunct Faculty at Pacific Oaks College, where I support the next generation of practitioners in integrating culturally responsive care into their work.
I’ve had the privilege of presenting for a wide range of audiences, including the Los Angeles Police Department psychologists, Writers Guild of America, UCLA Human Resources, California State University Los Angeles faculty, the Latino Behavioral Health Institute Conference, and community-based organizations across Southern California.
I also serve as Vice President of the International Society of Black Latinos, where I collaborate on initiatives that honor and expand awareness of Afro-Latinx histories, identities, and contributions across the diaspora.
At the heart of everything I do is a commitment to healing that is both personal and collective. I believe that when we honor our histories, tend to our well-being, and create life-affirming routines, we don’t just survive—we become our ancestors’ wildest dreams.
Keynotes/Workshop Topics
From Burnout to Bliss
The focus is on supporting individuals and communities in developing ways to carry out their goals, while honoring health in every aspect. The approach consists of exploring burnout and the cultural implications of its emergence, experience, and healing process.
Support in identifying resources for ongoing practice and growth.
Provision of products and specialized professional contacts to reinforce gains.
Periodic visits, upon request, to assess progress and envision new goals that match the team’s vision.
The Art of Living Deliciously
These workshops engage participants in learning tools to reconnect with passion for life by turning difficulties into opportunities to thrive.
The programs assist individuals in improving their relationships, and the goal of engaging in intentional creation of wellness is at the core of this process. As in all Art of Living Deliciously programs, the use of role plays, storytelling, writing exercises, guided imagery, visualization, relaxation, and movement exercises serve to enrich the conversations. Three areas of exploration are:
Exquisite Relationships: Nourishing Ourselves and Others
Robust Health: Mind, Body and Spirit
A Rich Legacy: Tangible and Intangible Riches
